Labor Day Weekend in Winchester Bay.

Licensed anglers who register to compete in the Derby, are eligible to win cash prizes for the largest fish each day and for the largest fish overall.

There are also additional drawings for prizes during the weekend.

Weigh-in sites are Unger’s Landing in Reedsport (by the Discovery Center)  and the U.S. Coast Guard Boat Launching Ramp in Winchester Bay.

The salmon derby is a fund-raiser for the Gardiner-Reedsport-Winchester Bay Salmon-Trout Enhancement Program. The program is a non-profit organization of volunteers dedicated to salmon-trout enhancement, propagation and public education. STEP volunteers will be on hand to promote chinook salmon fishing opportunities and to answer questions regarding the fishery.

Entry fees for the derby are $10 for an individual or $25 per private boat (three or more persons).

The derby will be offering several cash prizes: $500 for heaviest salmon overall, $150 for heaviest salmon each day, 3 $100 drawings for each salmon entered and $100 for ticket stub (raffle) drawing (win without a fish).

The heaviest fish at last year's derby weighed 33.41 pounds.

Tickets may be purchased from STEP members at the west boat ramp, east boat ramp (Coast Guard), and Unger's Landing  during the derby until noon Sept. 1.

Hours: Weigh-in hours are 6 am to 6 pm on Saturday and Sunday and from 6 am to 12 pm on Monday.
