The Oregon Dune Mushers is a club of dog mushing enthusiasts and people who love the Northern dog breeds. With meetings almost every month and many members running their teams together before the meetings during the cooler months, it a very active group. But the main purpose of the club is to organize and run the Mail Run.

Mushers gather every March from around the Northwest to harness up their teams of dogs to wheeled carts and run on the sand up the coast from North Bend to Florence. This will be the 28th year the ODM club puts on the Mail Run - this season it will be held on March 12 & 13, 2005. Among the participants, there are those who have mushed dogs for many years as well as those who are new to the sport.

The dog teams are categorized as follows: Mini Teams are those with 4 or 5 dogs, Traditional Teams and Advanced Teams are those with 5 to 10 dogs.

Saturday: Early in the morning, the teams start out at Bull Run parking lot (take access road off Highway 101 north of the North Bend bridge), just before Horsfall parking lot. The teams start at different intervals depending on their class. The public can watch the teams if out on the dunes and also as they approach Spinreel Park, near Lakeside, late morning. The Traditional & Advanced teams will then run into downtown Lakeside for a rest break and photo opportunity for the public. After the break, the teams will head out again toward Winchester Bay. The mini teams will end their run at Spinreel Park.

Sunday: The Mini Teams head north out of Siltcoos Beach parking lot at 10 am. Earlier, the large teams leave just north of Gardiner and take a lunch break at Siltcoos Beach parking lot. All teams end near Goose Pasture, Florence South Jetty area, in mid-afternoon. Another great viewing spot is Dunes Overlook, 10 miles north of Reedsport, midmorning on Sunday. For the exciting finish, all teams parade into Old Town Florence to give mushers a chance to visit with the public and offer for sale the commemorative envelopes their dog teams have carried from North Bend to Florence.
